J. MinaAbout

J. Mina is an interdisciplinary artist and designer, specializing in visual communication. Her professional background encompasses a wide range of industries, including beauty, music, and technology. Within her personal practice, Mina works to heavily integrate physical and digital modes of making within sculpture, film, interactive installation, and graphic design. Combining videos, texts, and made-objects to weave narratives of intimate experiences, of her own and that of others. She strives to examine and represent the intricacies of human relationships, the ones with ourselves, with each other, and with the evolving world around us. To work within the intersection of music, visual arts and technology as an artist, a designer, an empath, a woman, and above all, a human being.

‘Digital Void’ | Performative Installation

  • With intent backed by speculative thinking, ‘Digital Void’ examines the possible future of rave culture’s temporal and intimate dance spaces in the height of VR technology advancements. What happens to the physical dance spaces when we one day live in a completely digital reality? How will this effect our physical intimacy and our connection with one another? Through an interactive real-time video experience, the dancer is transformed into computer-generated symbols reminiscent of iconic imagery from rave culture graphic design—smiley faces, hearts, stars, music notes, and exclamation marks. A sheet of fresnel lens serves as a tangible and metaphorical barrier representing the blurring boundaries between the digital and physical worlds. Using dance to illustrate the idea of the body as “an instrument of power”, the dancer faces his digital self and watches as he “loses” the details of his human characteristics into the void of the digital matrix.
