‘Digital Void’ | Performative Installation
-
With intent backed by speculative thinking, ‘Digital Void’ examines the possible future of rave culture’s temporal and intimate dance spaces in the height of VR technology advancements. What happens to the physical dance spaces when we one day live in a completely digital reality? How will this effect our physical intimacy and our connection with one another? Through an interactive real-time video experience, the dancer is transformed into computer-generated symbols reminiscent of iconic imagery from rave culture graphic design—smiley faces, hearts, stars, music notes, and exclamation marks. A sheet of fresnel lens serves as a tangible and metaphorical barrier representing the blurring boundaries between the digital and physical worlds. Using dance to illustrate the idea of the body as “an instrument of power”, the dancer faces his digital self and watches as he “loses” the details of his human characteristics into the void of the digital matrix.
